I'm on my 2nd Tough Solar (my first is a G-Shock Solar, bought my partner a Protrek Tough Solar series).



Functioned well until they bought died on us (mine after a year, my partner's a bit lucky as it went out after 2 years) My mates had similar experiences as well.



Both of us are outdoors athletes and we're mostly on the trail 75% of the month, which should charge our Casios with no hassles at all. Brought them back to Casio and the staffs were just mum about it when we mentioned the weak charges and "recovery" issues. They suggested that they replace them with new batteries but will cost me 80% of the watch's price!



So I bought another Casio TS but died on me again after 8 months despite following every rule from Casio's recharging procedures.



On Casio's defence, I believe not all Tough Solar are duds. My thoughts on these are probably not all watches went to strict quality control when they rolled out the production line. I believe most of their solar panels are faulty.



Advice: stick to watches with regular batteries because replacement batteries for these TS's cost a bomb! And TS's aren't perfected yet. Let's just wait after a few years as rumour has it that Casio is planning to release a "new generation" solar panels due to quite a number of complaints with their current models.

The PRG 80 (mine is the green model PRG-80L-3V ) is one of the better looking of the Protrek range. The operation of the various functions with the large buttons is quick and very simple and certainly less complex than my Suunto X Lander. The solar power feature is a definite bonus with this range and I have had good use out of this watch for over 24 mths with the charged power level never falling below the "high". Although the watch is quite big the ease of display reading (great backlight by the way) makes wearing it a pleasure in all environments. The only downsides I can mention (and this is almost just for the sake of it) is that it has no 24 hour countdown timer (only a 60 minute one) and the day and date do not display at the same time so you either have to display the day and time or the date and time. The strap is often reported as being leather but is in fact plastic and nylon which is reasonably nice looking although I changed mine to a full black leather Suunto X Lander strap (which fitted well). There is a version with a titanium and/or stainless steel strap which may suit some but this is obviously more expensive. Seriously....the PRG80 is a really good watch, with a raised nicely machined protective ring around the tough glass display screen. I would not hesitate to say to anyone with a bit of a thing about useful gadget watches to get one.

This is a nice watch with a crisp, clear display. My eyes aren't great close up so this is important to me. All of the Casio triple sensor watches are big on your wrist but this is one of the smaller, more compact ones so it doesn't look too chunky and is quite smart. The solar recharging works fine and I've not had any problem through the British winter for instance (i.e. very little sunlight). The compass is great fun and has been very useful for me. The one small issue I have is the barometric history. Instead of graphing the history it has a system of 4 dashes which move up or down to indicate a change of pressure over the last 15 hours. Each dot moves only if there is a variation of 3 hPa or more. In efect you get a minimal indication of barometric history. In conclusion this is a great watch at a very good price, the only reason not to get this model would be if barometric history is important to you in which case you will probably need a slightly bigger watch which properly graphs the pressure trend.

This looked great for a cheap but stylish watch for a foriegn trip. Looked pretty good when it arrived also except that the hands are quite difficult to see against the background. The day/date display on separate dials is also too complex and difficutlt to see. Despite the 'Quality Assured' sticker on the box it was soon evident that the date function wasn't working, so the watch was soon on its way back. But why do I have to wait up to 30 days for a refund on faulty goods?

Looks OK. The temperautre function isn't too useful, it gives the ambient temperature of your wrist as the sensor appears not to be insulated from skin temperature. If you're interested in the temperature of your surroundings then you need to take it off for half an hour. Barometri pressure seems OK, altitude gives some odd readings at times. All the standard watch features work fine and the solar power hasn't let me down yet.

This is a very nice Casio watch, and having owned some Casio's before, I can easily say, this is one of the best. The build quality is very good, it feels solid, and sturdy, very much like the G-shock. The digits are big and clear, and the side buttons are easily accessible. The strap is really good, and made of strong leather, which is for me a lot better than metal straps. The wave captor feature makes this watch feels futuristic, and this is a technology that I did not know about before getting this watch. It does its job automatically, so you do not have to do anything. Best thing about it is that when there is day-light saving, the time changes by itself, so you will not have a problem with that. I really like the watch, it looks cool, and it looks like one of those watches that cost thousands of pounds, but at this price, it is a real bargain. It is good quality, good price, very cool, and does what a watch should do.

Why did I buy this? An obsession with timekeeping, and the appeal of the solar energy rechargeable battery. First the timekeeping. The radio signal works well. Against all the odds, it successfully picked up the signal in my locker at work. Second, the battery state shows 'HI' for now, it drops to 'MID' on occasion but so far, so good. The watch looks good, picks up the time signal well, and the solar battery seems to be able to remain charged. So why 4 stars and not 5? This watch has three alarms and an hourly time signal, but the sound is so quiet that the alarms are virtually useless. You'd need to be in a quiet place and listening out for them. The luminous hands only glow for a short time in the dark, and the push-button illumination only lights up the LCD panel. Some guidance on band adjustment would have been nice, but I love this watch. Recommended.

A good solid chunky watch with a clear dial and so-easy battery top-up during wear and a timekeeping check every night by radio signal while you're asleep. Many options available on watch, split timing, stop watch, etc if that's what you want. For me I just need an accurate timepiece and no battery change or manual corrections ever needed.

It should be noted that the case is only stainless steel for the top as the bottom and sides are of another material. Possibly, it makes the reception of the radio signal easier.

You may also find it easier to take the watch to a shop for the bracelet removal link in order for it to fit correctly. It only cost me 4 Euros extra on the total cost and I couldn't wear it from the box except maybe around my neck!!

I recommend you Google or use similar search engine, this watch for information and price. Plenty of other information avail. Mostly good.

 "Decent watch - shame about the battery" 2009-11-16

I have now owned this watch for almost 12 months - It has served me well as my daily wearer, taken it's fair share of knocks, and crud. I have also taken it flying in light aircraft, and the altimeter (on my copy at least) is pretty accurate, and I find the countdown timer useful also for fuel check warnings. The screen is a little harder to read in darker conditions than a normal (positive) LCD, but is great in daylight. The backlight is excellent, especially in auto mode. The problems with Batteries does seem to be a quality control thing. Mine is OK so far - although the power level dropped this week, probably due to the darker nights, and me wearing long sleeves in the colder weather and thus blocking the solar cell. I just left the watch under some studio lighting for several hours and it's now back to fully charged - we'll see how long that lasts!



In conclusion, I would probably buy a normal (grey) screen watch, not a negative LCD for readability - and due to the battery issues, I'd probably go for a normal battery powered watch until these issues have cleared up.

I'm on my 2nd Tough Solar (my first is a G-Shock Solar, bought my partner a Protrek Tough Solar series).



Functioned well until they bought died on us (mine after a year, my partner's a bit lucky as it went out after 2 years) My mates had similar experiences as well.



Both of us are outdoors athletes and we're mostly on the trail 75% of the month, which should charge our Casios with no hassles at all. Brought them back to Casio and the staffs were just mum about it when we mentioned the weak charges and "recovery" issues. They suggested that they replace them with new batteries but will cost me 80% of the watch's price!



So I bought another Casio TS but died on me again after 8 months despite following every rule from Casio's recharging procedures.



On Casio's defence, I believe not all Tough Solar are duds. My thoughts on these are probably not all watches went to strict quality control when they rolled out the production line. I believe most of their solar panels are faulty.



Advice: stick to watches with regular batteries because replacement batteries for these TS's cost a bomb! And TS's aren't perfected yet. Let's just wait after a few years as rumour has it that Casio is planning to release a "new generation" solar panels due to quite a number of complaints with their current models.

 "Beware of the problems of this watch !" 2008-06-16

I have bought this watch on the Internet, it was brand new, sealed in the manufacturers packaging. It indeed looks very solid and nice. Actually, the reason for buying it was that I wanted all metal watch with a hard to scratch glass. The watch indeed fills these requirements with the room to spare. However, I'm returning the watch to the seller, because:



1. It has very little sensitivity. Having been an electronics engineer by the education, now it is clear to me why - you simply can't cheat the laws of physics and put the receiving ferrite bar antenna inside all metal case without badly affecting the sensitivity of the receiver. I mean, here, where I live (in Latvia), this watch can only pick up the German DCF77 signal, if I carry it outdoors in the middle of a night. My other watches (also Casio Waveceptors) pick up the signal at 23:00 local time without a problem, even when on my table a few meters from the window. The reason for this is that their cases are partially plastic, which lets the radio waves to come inside without a problem.



2. The illuminating light is terrible. Instead of illuminating only the digital display from behind, as on the one of my other Casio watches, it lights up the whole face of the watch from its bottom with a bright glare, and it is almost impossible to see either the positions of the hands or the digital time on the display. Why Casio designers did it this way, is a mystery for me.



3. The face has only few marks, which glow in the dark, so it is not easy to understand what time is it (see also p.2). The second hand doesn't glow at all.

I have been looking for a watch that will withstand a very physical job and this watch is it. After a few bad experiences with the dreaded plastic faces Casio seem to be pumping out(had two replaced within four weeks so ended up just returning them) I went to the casio web site and looked at each watch spec to see which ones came with glass faces. I looked at the watches in the local jewelers (cheaky) and this one fitted the bill, It weighs good, looks good, and has a glass face, it is also cheaper on-line than in high street jewelers up to £40 in some cases so I would say this was an all round good deal. The watch came within three days better packed than my recent ones brought from high street retailers. Would recommend this watch and this seller .

This watch gives you accurate time keeping and is easy to set up with the instructions. The bracelet is just as easy to adjust, all you need is very small jewellers screwdriver and a light hammer to knock the pins out to remove the sections for size adjustment, although the clasp doesn't offer much fine adjustment. Don't be put off by its weight, once on your wrist, it's weight gives you a reassuring feeling of quality that only a well constructed watch can give you. The luminous hands and hour markers are still readable after many hours of being in the dark. All in all, a great watch for the money and will, I'm sure, give you many years of service and pleasure.
